My site presents East German architectural detail and decoration seen in Berlin and the surrounding areas. It includes public art such as murals, mosaics, reliefs, as well as industrial design elements such as fences, walls, door handles, cornices etc.
Many of these ‘Bauelementen’ are now being demolished, removed, or have fallen into disrepair. The aim of this blog is to document them in their original locations before they’re gone, and write some accompanying guff which suggests that I know something about them. Which, as you’ll see, I often don’t.
Seriously though: I have tried to dig out some provenance info where I can, but given that there isn’t much of it around, it’s often patchy at best.
So I hope you enjoy this blog, and appreciate the long, hard seconds gone into producing it. And, if you’re in Berlin, I hope you feel inspired to go and check out the design for yourself, before it’s all gone!
