RIP Walter Womacka

East Germany’s most prominent artist, and the man behind many a brilliant mosaic,Walter Womacka, has sadly died. Gawd rest his soul.

Hey, Makarenko!

This lovely mural decorates the entrance to the former Königsheide/Makarenko children’s home, Südostallee 134, in Schöneweide. It was executed by the Bert Heller Kollektiv in 1952-3 as part of the VEB Baubetreuung Berlin’s development of the whole complex. Here’s a jolly looking leaflet about the home in its heyday!
